What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is the surgical removal of your tooth. This oral surgery is sometimes deemed necessary when a tooth is badly damaged or decayed. Tooth extractions are often performed when wisdom teeth are impacted and begin to form in a position that interferes with proper growth.

You begin with a consultation with Mr. Ankermiller to discuss how the process works and what you can expect on the day of your extraction. You’re referred to Dr. Roach on location, or another dentist of your choice, for your tooth extraction, which should only take around 45 minutes or less. You typically have some form of anesthesia, and Dr. Roach might need to remove parts of your bone or gums to extract your tooth.

Dr. Roach surgically removes your tooth and carefully stitches the wound shut. He uses gauze pads to soak up the bleeding. Once your anesthesia has worn off, you can return home.

Depending on the anesthetic or numbing agent used, you might need to have someone drive you home and ensure you’re comfortable and safe. The stitches usually dissolve after a few days, and many people experience little to no pain during the recovery. Your mouth usually takes around three weeks to completely heal.

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction might be recommended if:

• You have trauma or crowding
• You have a wisdom tooth that can’t grow in properly
• It appears that your tooth is likely to cause problems in the future that are avoidable now
• It’s necessary for you to undergo certain cosmetic procedures such as braces, treatments for gum disease, and other dental care

What can I expect following my tooth extraction?

Dr. Roach applies a gauze pack to the extraction site to reduce bleeding. Patients leave the gauze in place for around 45 minutes, and if the bleeding continues, remove the gauze and apply fresh, damp gauze. A small amount of bleeding is normal. Your mouth slowly fills in the bone where the tooth root was by forming a blood clot.

Continue to floss and brush your teeth twice daily but avoid the teeth that are next to the healing socket. Gently rinse your mouth but avoid mouthwash for the first few days after your extraction.
