What are immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures are installed into the bone socket shortly following the extraction of natural teeth. In many cases, depending on the number of teeth extracted, immediate dentures can be fitted on the same day, hence the name.

What can I expect when I get immediate dentures?

It’s best to plan for immediate dentures in advance, before you have your teeth extracted. To plan for your immediate dentures, you typically have one or two visits to the dental office prior to your tooth removal, where Mr. Ankermiller takes precise measurements of your original tooth size, placement, and areas of your lower facial structure. These measurements help Mr. Ankermiller determine the proper size for your new dentures.

A wide array of dentures is available, and Mr. Ankermiller takes time to help you decide what’s best for you. Custom impressions or the dentures you’ve chosen using a specialized computer technology are sent to the dental lab where your dentures are created by a lab technician. Once your dentures arrive back to the office, you’re referred to Dr. Bart Roach for a tooth extraction on location. Dr. Roach extracts your old teeth under anesthesia.

Your gums might be swollen following your dental procedures and, in some cases, it can take a few weeks for the swelling to go down and for your bones and gums to completely heal. When your gums shrink back to the normal size and shape, your new dentures might shift slightly out of place and require adjustment or tissue conditioning, performed in the office.

What are the benefits of immediate dentures?

The only benefit you have with immediate dentures is that you do not have to go around without teeth in your mouth. Your gums will be sore, and it usually takes six months on average for your gums to heal. You will need tissue conditioners (temporary refit of denture material) to stabilize your dentures as your gums heal.
